Lighting Design and Light Art Magazine Image The EU switch off bustedlampz

Thomas Edison’s invention is saying goodbye.

In an effort to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy security, the regulation was drafted under guidance of European Commission to phase out the sale of all incandescent and poorly-performing light bulbs by 2010. The phase-out scheme is set between 2009 and 2012.

This was done on the initiative of EU energy ministers, following the Eco-Design Directive which aims to reduce the energy consumption of consumer products running on electricity.  The directive was adopted in July 2005 and provides performance requirements for energy-using products.

The phase-out doesn’t cover all incandescent and halogen lamps but only non-directional lights, making exemptions in some cases like halogens with specific lamp caps and special purpose incandescent lamps such as traffic lights and infrared lamps.

The selection of products to be taken off the shelves is to be decided on product-by-product basis.
