Lighting Design and Light Art Magazine Image Burj Khalifa Opening Event Lighting Show burj

In the beginning of January 2010 the opening ceremony for the world’s tallest building was staged in Dubai. Burj Khalifa, which rises up to 828m high was inaugurated and for the opening ceremony Space Cannon staged a lighting show.

Under the direction of Prisme International, and in collaboration with Procon Hamburg and Playback Istanbul, spacecannon has provided 300 Ireos spotlights with 7000 W each to highlight the building’s huge dimensions. As a special attraction, the world’s strongest searchlight – Ramses 2, boasting an installed lamp load of 72000 W – was presented for the first time.

The Y-shaped floor plan of the mega tower, which was designed by American architect Adrian Smith, is reminiscent of a desert lily. The tower tapers in an upward spiralling pattern. It was precisely this spectacular design that was to be highlighted by the lighting show at the launch event.

By setting the lighting stage for Burj Khalifa, spacecannon implemented the largest installation in the company’s history. Comments Peter Roos, Managing Director: “With this large-scale illumination project we have once again demonstrated that we are a professional partner for superior architectural presentation. We use conventional light sources but also state-of-the-art LED technology.”
