The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IES) has commissioned EPRI and the EPRI Lighting Research Office (EPRI LRO) to construct an international survey and database of lighting research currently underway around the world. The purposes of the survey and database are:

• To define the scope of lighting research currently being conducted;
• To identify gaps in lighting research that need to be addressed to advance the state of the art of lighting practice;
• To match research funding sources, public and private, with those both interested and capable of performing needed studies;
• To facilitate the possible creation of an international research agenda.

The IES Research Committee intends to utilize the research database to help devise a long term plan which will address needed research and the means to fund a serious effort to respond to those needs.
