Switchted on London was a Lighting festival that took place from 7th to 14th February 2008.

Mindseye Lighting were also participants in this event and they designed the lighting for the HMS Belfast, an iconic landmark on the River Thames in London.

Brief:
Mindseye Lighting Ltd, a London lighting design consultancy, have risen to the challenge of lighting an iconic London landmark; HMS Belfast, in an energy efficient way, to show the power of light in the City of London as part of the Switched on London event taking place between the 7-14th February 2008. The event, now in its second year will be held in the Capital and the event aims to highlight the importance of sustainable lighting design in the night-time urban environment.  A number of sites in the Pool of London, between London Bridge and Tower Bridge will be lit and the event will be audited for its’ energy consumption and its overall environmental impact, whilst at the same time highlighting the unnecessary lighting of office space at night in the area.

Mindseye Lighting responded to the challenge by adopting the role as ‘camofluers’ of HMS Belfast. Harking back to the era of Dazzle Ships (inspired by a visit to the Imperial War Museum) where colour and shape were used to disguise the shape and direction of battle ships from the predatory threat of U-boats.  Mindseye Lighting intend to show that lighting can be done in an exciting and creative way without increased use of energy consumption.

Particular challenges:
A temporary installation with no computerised plans of the vessel.  This was one of the biggest challenges to date for the Mindseye Design team in view of the fact that they were under strict instructions to not attach anything to the vessel! We were limited to one lighting manufacturer.

We were privileged to have been asked to participate in the above project and we are very excited about seeing the live results on the 7th February. There will be a reception (sponsored by the IALD and supported by Better Bankside) at the Business Design Centre, Islington during the Preview Evening of The ARC Show on February 11th. This will take place from 4pm – 9pm with coaches taking guests to the Switched On London site at 9pm. During the Preview Evening you will also be able to walk around the show and see the Switched On London Gallery complete with the very first showing of photographs of the completed installations. You need to be registered for The ARC Show to gain entry into the Business Design Centre. You can do this on The ARC Show website (www.thearcshow.com) or on the night of the reception (there might be a queue though).
