As our first project article in 2010 we present an installation designed by BDP for Maggie’s London Night Hike. Maggie’s is a cancer caring centre which organises an annual night hike through streets of London which was in 2009 joined by a record 2000 hikers.

It is an installation that evolves through time as the observers/participants add their ‘piece’ to it.
Here is more information about it by BDP:

BDP’s second light installation was a low tech interactive event that was recorded as a time lapse movie.  When the 2000 hikers arrived at Battersea for a well deserved rest they were given the opportunity to write a personal message of memory, inspiration, hope or encouragement on a white paper bag.

A single Osram LED Dot-It was then placed in each bag and over the night the simple lanterns grew to form an enormous heart-shaped lantern installation in the open air.

Photographer Sanna Fisher-Payne recorded the growth of the installation with a time lapse camera and a digital stills camera.

The creation of the message lanterns was a very emotional experience for many of the walkers and the installation received much positive feedback.
