Lighting Design International has sent us images of Gleneagles Spa project they completed in the summer 2008.

The spa has 20 treatment rooms and is part of the Gleneagles hotel in Auchterarder/Scotland.

With so many spas currently following similar themes, Lighting Design International were briefed to create something new and unique, yet simple and sophisticated whilst combining both classic and contemporary concepts to fit in the style of the resort. It is used all the year round and it needed to present the feeling of luxury, warmth and comfort. Whilst the ultimate aim was to make the end users experience unforgettable, the greatest challenge was to achieve all of this within a limited budget. It is almost entirely internal and secluded and the long winter evenings means the changes of lighting were all important to set the mood.

The lighting leads one way through to the café/juice bar area. This was a dramatic walkway with a wall of what appears to be crystal beads but are indeed a wall of chrome beads dramatically lit by lighting concealed within a slot.

We carried on the theme of highlighting the luxurious wall finishes and textures in the treatment circulation areas. The use of uplights to the textured walls creates drama with pinspots to art and sculptures providing accent lighting.

The day beds are separated by double layers of bronze organza that are internally lit from concealed lighting within a slot in the ceiling.

One of the boldest features of the spa is the dark brown – almost black – Vitality Pool, lit with a combination of fibre optics and LEDs. The neck plunge internally incorporates fibre optics that changes the colour of the water as it flows providing a dramatic impact against the black backdrop.

The fibres dramatically light a feature glass wall that separates the pool from the sky-lit courtyard with its reflecting pool and trees beyond, the lighter and brighter relaxation area during the day converting to a dramatic night time oasis.
