Municipalities of Ontario conducted a research on Street Lighting focusing on evaluation of different technologies and practices.
It is a worthwhile reading even though the quality of the LED section is disputed by LEDs Magazine. It covers many important topics such as Light Polution, Required hours of operation and much more.
After reading the chapter that evaluates LED technology, please read the comments by LEDs Magazine too.

The New York’s Department of Transportation has contracted Office for Visual Interaction to install and test LED lighting. If the tests are successful, the city’s entire stock of 300,000 street lamps could one day be replaced with L.E.D. versions. OVI’s job is not also to test LED technology in lighting streets but also to redesign luminaire poles as well. Today’s poles have become a designer’s nightmare, with signs, traffic lights, control boxes and other accessories hung willy-nilly from them. The LEDs themselves are designed by Lighting Science Group and the company expects that the payback period for the city will be 2 to 3 years.
Not only will the city reduce it’s power usage 25 to 30 percent, but due to much longer lifetime of the LEDs, will the city benefit also from lower maintenance costs.

An interesting piece of art that could definitely serve as an inspiration. It’s a performance for a matrix of 64 gas balloons, lights, and sound.
A room is filled with deep, evolving noises from a four-channel sound system. An eight-by-eight array of white, self-illuminated spheres floats in space like the atoms of a complex molecule.
Through variable positioning and illumination of each atom, a dynamic display sculpture comes into being, composed of physical objects, patterns of light, and synchronous rhythmic and textural sonic events. Change, sound, and movement converge into a larger form.

The height of the helium balloons is adjusted with a computer-controlled cable, whilst the internal illumination is accomplished using dimmable super-bright LEDs, creating a pixel in a warped 8×8 spatial matrix.

The sonic events, the patterns of light, and the movement of the balloons are manipulated in real time as a 45-60 minute-long performance.
